No ordinary mortal. . .

“I don’t think there is any such thing as an ordinary mortal”

- Joseph Campbell

One of the most beautiful things I learnt upon beginning my journey with meditation is that anybody can do it. It is anything but an exclusive practice reserved for the “spiritual” few.

You need only be open to the possibility of learning something new (embodying the virtue of Curiosity, one may say) to realise the all-inclusive, easy-to-practice, and life-changingly beneficial nature of meditation. And yes, I too am unsure if ‘changingly’ is a word  ;)

“Everything that can make us better and happier God has placed directly in front of us, or at least very close to us” - Seneca

Another alluring element of daily meditation is that it requires nothing but our time. Even the distraction of our kids, our pets, (or our partners… ha!) needn’t deter us from sitting for 20mins twice a day, eyes closed, reciting our mantra… if we remember.

My cat is a regular guest in my afternoon meditation; he brings great humour to the practice and yes, even some frustration at times. But I know enough now to understand whole-heartedly that no one meditation is any more or less beneficial than the next.

I like to compare the practice with that of brushing my teeth; something I never judge - just something I always do. See it as ‘brushing you brain’ if you will; a practice that allows our nervous system to de-stress in the form of thoughts.

“But just living with one’s heart open to others in compassion is a way - a way to illumination - wide open to all” - Joseph Campbell

Whether it’s sitting in a chair, sitting up in bed, taking a seat on the couch, or even sitting in your car - a common practice in my 1978 De Ville - 2 x 20mins of daily meditation is a path to illumination, healing, peace and power available to all.

All it takes is a little curiosity to make the enquiry and just enough discipline to instil the practice. And once the practice becomes a habit, and the habit a ritual, we no longer need to decide to meditate; it’s something we simply do (twice a day, every day). A deeply nourishing and powerful something from which we will reap the benefits for the rest of days.

“If you devote your life to striving for spiritual perfection you will never be discontented, because whatever it is you desire will be always in your power to achieve” - Pascal

In the Vedic meditation tradition, when you intuit a call to action it is said that you are receiving a charm. This ‘charm’ is a message from the universe, a signal from higher powers regarding what you can best do to, ultimately, serve the Whole. So if you feel charmed to know more, get in touch with BEST MIND now and let’s take a deeper dive into the wondrous benefits of the twice-daily practice.

With love,
